June 2008

Congrats to organisers John Dempsey and Trevor Davies as well as all who participated in today’s Jacob Aagaard Simultaneous in the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery.  Jacob played 101 players non-stop over a period of 6 hours, scoring 82 wins, 12 draws and 7 losses, raising a total of £600 for charity.  More details here.

A strong contingent of GMCC players were of course present, including Yours Truly, Chris Perkin, Evis Perdikou, Jack Collins, Brian Collins, Norman Lynsey, Paul Macdonald and Roy Smeeton.

This post is part one of an occasional series outlining the illustrious history of Glasgow Montrose Chess Club.

In this bumper edition we delve into minutes and other archival material covering the first year of the club, from its formation in 30th September 1965 to its first Annual General Meeting on 5th September 1966.

Many thanks to Sam Collins for making this material available for use on glasgowmontrosechess.org.

As announced on Saturday, a meet-up was held in the bar of the Novotel yesterday evening. Mearns, Perdikou, Perkin, Reid, Smeeton (pictured above), and your Webmaster were in attendance.  Some friendlies were played, a certain amount of beer was consumed, a great many photos were taken, and cameras compared (Evis just bought a new DSLR).  Only one club championship game was played, in which yours truly blundered his queen.  Click “More…” to savour the nastiness…

There will be a meeting in the Club premises at the Novotel on Monday 23rd June to finish off those outstanding Club Championship games.

See you there!

If you want to see Glasgow Montrose CC’s finest doing battle with current British Champion Jacob Aagaard, come along to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery from 10:30am on Saturday, 28th June.

The simultaneous display, open to all comers, is being organised by our very own John Dempsey.  GMCC stalwarts Roy Smeeton, Brian Collins, Jack Collins, Norman Lindsay, Evis Perdikou, Chris Perkin, Jim Mearns, Bahlool Voughey as well as your humble webmaster will all be present. You can even have a go yourself: Jacob will be playing 12 boards – every time a game finishes a new player can join for a fee of £5).

Some photos of Glasgow Montrose Chess Club’s final night of the 2007/8 season can be found here (flickr.com).

GMCC was displaced from it’s (former) premises by some bagpipe playing types, so we repaired to the nearby Hogshead on Woodlands Road.  This proved a blessing in disguise, as a very enjoyable evening of al fresco chess & beer ensued…
