Team Captain Report – ‘A’ Team 2015-16

Thanks to ‘A’ Team captain Robin Templeton, who provided the following report covering the ‘A’ Team’s progress during the 2015-16 season:

Glasgow Montrose A team are looking forward to another season in Glasgow Division One. Last season the team performed very well to retain their place.

The opening match away to Phones A was always close but the home team prevailed 5 – 3. A welcome visitor back to Montrose was John Dempsey who played for the US Virgin Islands at the recent Baku Olympiad in Azerbaidjan.

The second match provided Montrose with its biggest win a 6.5 – 1.5 over Giffnock A and gave the team real hope of staying up. A great team performance with 5 wins and three draws to send everyone home happy.

Next came a run of four matches against Bearsden A, Hamilton A, Stepps A and Cathcart A where we did not expect much against vastly stronger teams and had to scratch around for game points.

The utter surprise came with the defeat of the reigning champions Paisley A by a vastly underrated Montrose. Paisley were missing their top board Steve Mannion who was playing in Cappelle-la-Grande. 3 wins on the bottom 4 boards set the stage for a famous victory that all but sealed the team’s place in the league. Paisley 3.5 – 4.5 Montrose!!

Buoyed by a famous win Montrose tried to make it two wins in a row by beating perennial league winners Polytechnic A in the penultimate round. It was not to be with the visitors escaping with a 4.5 -3.5 win.

The last round was merely a formality with the team’s spot in division one secure. The trip to Cumbernauld provided a welcome fillip to the end of the season when the team ran out 5 – 3 winners in a match where the score could have been more.

Looking forward to season 2016/7
Robin Templeton
