We reported a few days back on Glasgow Montrose player Ed Ferry’s win in the Major Tournament of the Marymass Congress.  Here’s the first in a couple of game reports from that weekend (notes by Edward Ferry): (more…)

The 47th Glasgow Chess Congress takes place on 7th – 9th November 2008 in the Kelvin Hall International Arena and Kelvingrove art GalleryClick here to download your entry form (PDF, 521Kb).

Two members of the Glasgow Congress Committee are GMCC members, and two others are sponsoring the event.  This reflects the high level of involvement by GMCC members in managing and organising chess events in Glasgow and the West of Scotland.

The Scottish Chess Championships drew to a close yesterday with GMCC regulars Chris Perkin scoring 3/9 in the International Open, Norman Lindsay scoring 3.5/7 in the seniors, and Evis Perdikou swooping in to scoop a Under-1800′s grading prize in the Sunday Lightning Championship with 5/7.

Good luck to the Glasgow Montrose players battling in the Scottish Chess Championship between Saturday 5th and Sunday 13th.  Chris Perkin is playing in the International Open and Norman Lynsey is in the Seniors.  Chris experienced fifteen minutes of fame yesterday afternoon when he rose to board 14 (one of the internet connected boards) and had his game broadcast live to millions of viewers (potentially…).  In retrospect, he probably wishes he hadn’t! Live games can be found here.

Congrats to organisers John Dempsey and Trevor Davies as well as all who participated in today’s Jacob Aagaard Simultaneous in the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery.  Jacob played 101 players non-stop over a period of 6 hours, scoring 82 wins, 12 draws and 7 losses, raising a total of £600 for charity.  More details here.

A strong contingent of GMCC players were of course present, including Yours Truly, Chris Perkin, Evis Perdikou, Jack Collins, Brian Collins, Norman Lynsey, Paul Macdonald and Roy Smeeton.

As announced on Saturday, a meet-up was held in the bar of the Novotel yesterday evening. Mearns, Perdikou, Perkin, Reid, Smeeton (pictured above), and your Webmaster were in attendance.  Some friendlies were played, a certain amount of beer was consumed, a great many photos were taken, and cameras compared (Evis just bought a new DSLR).  Only one club championship game was played, in which yours truly blundered his queen.  Click “More…” to savour the nastiness…
